Lada Niva Travel (1st generation): Front Axle Differential Oil Change
The front axle differential of the Niva Travel is filled with long-life oil, but it should be changed at the maintenance interval, or when you see leaks or hear noise, and after driving through water. The fill capacity is about 1 L (1.1 qt); the exact amount is determined by the oil level at the lower edge of the fill hole. The job is simple. The key points are to change the oil while the differential is warm and to fill up to the lower edge of the hole.

Tools
6- inspection pit, vehicle ramps or lift
- 17 mm wrench or 12 mm hex key for the plugs (depending on plug type)
- syringe or pump for filling oil
- drain pan of 2 L or larger
- rags
- torque wrench
Step by step
10 steps- Park the vehicle on a level surface, ramps or over a pit. Turn off the engine, set the parking brake and place wheel chocks under the rear wheels. It is best to drive a short distance first so the oil warms up and flows better.
- Locate the front axle differential (at the front, under the engine, toward the left side in the direction of travel). If a skid plate for the oil pan or axle is installed, remove it.
- Clean the dirt around the fill and drain plugs so it does not get inside.
- First loosen the fill (check) plug in the upper part of the housing. This confirms that it can be opened, and the oil will drain more freely. Do not drain the oil if you then cannot remove the fill plug.
- Place the drain pan and remove the drain plug in the lower part of the housing. Drain the oil completely and let it drip for 10-15 minutes. Check the condition of the oil: fine metallic "dust" is acceptable, but larger particles and shavings are a sign of gear or bearing wear.
- Wipe the drain plug (it may have a magnetic insert, so clean off any deposits), and replace the sealing ring or washer if one is fitted. Install the drain plug. Tightening torque is in the range of 30-50 N·m (22-37 lb-ft); check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual. Do not overtighten, since the threads in the housing are aluminum or cast iron but can still be stripped easily.
- Pour fresh oil through the fill hole using a syringe or pump. Fill until the oil begins to seep slightly over the lower edge of the hole. The approximate volume is about 1 L (1.1 qt).
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the level to settle, and top up to the edge if necessary.
- Install the fill plug (same torque range of 30-50 N·m (22-37 lb-ft); check the service manual) and wipe any residue off the housing.
- Reinstall the skid plate. Drive 5-10 km (3-6 miles), then inspect the plugs and seals for leaks. Check the oil level if necessary.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Use only GL-5 oil of the appropriate viscosity
- Do not mix different types of oil, and do not fill with automatic transmission fluid
- If the oil is very dark, smells burnt or contains large metal particles, it is better to have the differential diagnosed and repaired at a repair shop
- Never leave the vehicle on a jack without additional safety stands: work only over a pit, on ramps or on jack stands
