Lada Niva Travel (Gen 1): Transfer Case Oil Change

The Niva Travel transfer case has its own oil volume, separate from the transmission and the axles. Change the oil when the transfer case is warm so it drains completely. Check the level at the bottom edge of the fill hole. The fill capacity is close to 0.8 L (0.85 qt).

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 8 Tools: Inspection pit or vehicle ramps, wrench or socket for the transfer case plugs (hex or square-drive, depending on the plug type; check on the vehicle), torque wrench, drain pan of at least 1 L (1.1 qt), syringe or fluid pump with a hose, shop rags, cleaner

Step by step

8 steps
  1. Warm up the vehicle with a short drive of 10-15 minutes so the oil thins out. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface, over a pit, or on ramps. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
  2. If necessary, remove the engine skid plate and the transfer case guard. Thoroughly clean the areas around the fill plug and the drain plug so dirt does not get inside.
  3. Place the drain pan under the transfer case. First loosen the upper fill plug to make sure it can be removed. If you cannot break the fill plug loose, there is no point in draining the oil.
  4. Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the housing. Let the oil drain completely, usually 10-15 minutes. Inspect the plug: a thin gray dust on the magnetic part is possible, but large metal chips indicate wear and call for diagnosis.
  5. Wipe the plug, replace the sealing ring or washer if present and damaged, and install the drain plug. Tightening torque is about 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft); confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications for your plug type.
  6. Through the fill hole, pump in fresh 75W-90 or 80W-90 GL-4 oil with a syringe or pump up to the bottom edge of the hole, about 0.8 L (0.85 qt). When the oil starts to seep out slightly, stop.
  7. Wait 2-3 minutes for the level to settle and top up if needed. Tighten the fill plug to 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft) (the same range as the drain plug).
  8. Wipe down the transfer case, reinstall the guard if you removed it, and drive 5-10 km. Then inspect the transfer case for leaks. If necessary, check the level again on a level surface.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not mix oils of different classes, and do not fill above the bottom edge of the hole: the excess escapes through the breather, and the transfer case will leak
  • If the drained oil contains a lot of metal chips, is cloudy, or smells burnt, do not put off diagnosing the transfer case
  • Before tightening the plugs, check that the threads are not damaged
  • When working under the vehicle, use sturdy jack stands, not just a jack
