Lada Niva Travel (1st generation): Rear axle oil change
Per the maintenance schedule, the rear axle oil on the Niva Travel is changed about every 60,000 km, or every few years. Change it more often under severe use (water crossings, mud, towing a trailer). The job is simple: drain the oil through the lower plug and refill through the fill hole up to the lower edge.
Parts
2| № | Part |
|---|---|
| 01 | 75W-90 gear oil, API GL-5 (synthetic or semi-synthetic)about 1.0-1.3 L (1.1-1.4 qt) |
| 02 | Sealing washers or O-rings for drain and fill plugsif needed |
Tools
7- inspection pit, vehicle ramps, or lift
- wrench for the rear axle plugs (12 mm hex key or 17 mm socket, depending on plug type)
- torque wrench
- syringe or pump for gear oil
- drain pan of at least 2 L (2.1 qt)
- rags
- gloves
Step by step
8 steps- Warm up the axle with a short 10-15 minute drive. Warm oil drains more completely. Park the vehicle on a level, flat surface, on ramps, or over a pit. Apply the parking brake and select first gear.
- Wipe the dirt from around the fill plug (at the rear of the axle housing, on the side or top) and the drain plug (at the bottom of the housing). No dirt should get inside.
- Loosen the fill plug first. This confirms you will be able to open it after draining. If it will not come out, you will have no way to refill the axle.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the plug. Let the oil drain completely, which takes 5-10 minutes. Inspect the oil. A light, fine metallic film on the magnetic plug is normal. Large chips or gear fragments are a reason to have the axle diagnosed.
- Clean any particles off the drain plug (if it is magnetic), check the washer or O-ring, and replace it if worn. Install the plug and tighten it to about 30-45 N·m (22-33 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications).
- Pour in fresh 75W-90 GL-5 oil with a syringe through the fill hole. Keep filling until the oil starts to seep slightly out of the hole, meaning it has reached the lower edge. As a volume guide, expect about 1.0-1.3 L (1.1-1.4 qt).
- Wait 2-3 minutes for the level to settle. Top up if needed and install the fill plug, tightening it to about 30-45 N·m (22-33 lb-ft).
- Wipe off the axle and the plugs. Take a test drive of 5-10 km, then check the plugs, pinion seal, and axle shaft seals for leaks.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use GL-4 oil in the rear axle: it has a hypoid gear set and requires GL-5
- Do not fill above the lower edge of the hole, or the oil can escape through the breather and flood the brake assemblies
- If oil gets onto the rear brakes, the shoes and drums will need to be cleaned or replaced
- If you are not confident in your abilities, do not have reliable supports, or cannot safely work under the vehicle, take it to a repair shop
