Mitsubishi L200 2.4 DI-D (4N15, 2015): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

The 4N15 engine is equipped with a diesel particulate filter, so low-ash Low SAPS oils are mandatory. Change the oil every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. The procedure is simple and is done on a lift or over an inspection pit.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 9 Tools: 17 mm socket, breaker bar or ratchet, oil filter wrench (if a removable filter housing is installed), 10 L used oil container, funnel, shop rags

Part

  • 🔩 Mitsubishi MD360935 oil filter (equivalents: Mann HU6004X, Bosch F026407124). Mitsubishi MF660035 drain plug gasket. Engine oil 8.4 L (8.9 qt) — for engines with a diesel particulate filter (DPF), use ACEA C1, C2, C3 or C4, JASO DL-1, viscosity SAE 0W-30 or 5W-30

Step by step

9 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature, shut it off and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. The oil will drain into the oil pan but stay fluid enough to drain quickly.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle on a lift or drive it over a pit. Remove the engine skid plate by undoing its mounting bolts.
  3. Place the container under the drain plug, located at the bottom of the oil pan. Unscrew the plug with a 17 mm socket. Let the oil drain completely (5-7 minutes).
  4. Replace the drain plug sealing ring with a new one (MF660035) and wipe any dirt off the threads. Tighten the plug to 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's service documentation).
  5. The 4N15 oil filter is a cartridge type, located at the top of the engine on the left (driver's side). Unscrew the filter housing counterclockwise and remove the old cartridge.
  6. Clean the filter seat of dirt. Lubricate the new filter's sealing ring with clean engine oil. Install the new MD360935 cartridge, screw the housing in by hand until it stops, then tighten it an additional quarter turn.
  7. Pour in fresh oil through the oil filler neck on the engine's top cover. Add the first 7.5 L (7.9 qt), then check the level with the dipstick. The mark should be between MIN and MAX. Top up to the upper mark (total capacity 8.4 L (8.9 qt) including the filter).
  8. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter housing. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, check the dipstick level again and top up if necessary.
  9. Reinstall the engine skid plate. Dispose of the used oil and filter at a hazardous waste collection point.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Using oils without Low SAPS approvals (ACEA C1-C4, JASO DL-1) will clog the particulate filter and cause it to fail. Do not mix oils of different brands or viscosities. In frequent severe-duty use (off-road driving, towing, dusty roads), shorten the change interval to 7,000-8,000 km.
