Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI CWVB (2019): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
On the naturally aspirated 1.6 MPI (CWVB, 90 hp), change the oil every 15,000 km or once a year. For city driving with heavy traffic and short trips, it is better to change it every 10,000 km. The fill capacity is about 4 L (4.2 qt). Determine the exact amount by the marks on the dipstick.
Part
- 🔩 Engine oil SAE 5W-30 or 5W-40 meeting VW 502 00 / 505 00 specs (ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4), about 4 L (4.2 qt). Oil filter (spin-on or cartridge, depending on version) and a new drain plug washer

Step by step
10 steps- Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes to operating temperature so the oil thins out and drains more completely. Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes.
- Park the car on level ground, then raise it onto jack stands or drive it onto ramps. If there is a plastic engine undercover, remove it.
- Open the oil filler cap on the engine. This lets the oil drain faster.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug. The oil is hot, so be careful. Draining takes 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, replace the oil filter. Position the drain pan, then remove the filter housing cap or the filter itself. If the filter is a cartridge type, be sure to replace the housing cap's O-rings. Lubricate the new O-rings with fresh oil.
- With a paper cartridge, let the remaining oil drain back into the housing and wipe the mating surface clean. Tighten the housing cap to the manufacturer's specification. The torque depends on the version and is usually in the range of 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft).
- Clean the drain plug and the seat on the oil pan. Install a new washer and tighten the plug to specification (usually 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft)). Do not overtighten, because the threads in an aluminum oil pan strip easily.
- Pour in about 3.5 L (3.7 qt) of fresh oil through the funnel, wait 2-3 minutes for it to drain down, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the upper mark (MAX), but not above it.
- Close the filler cap and start the engine for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out 1-2 seconds after startup. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and recheck the dipstick level, topping up if needed. Reset the service interval indicator through the instrument cluster menu if your car has that function. Take the used oil to a recycling collection point.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Use only oil that meets VW 502 00 / 505 00 specs (do not use diesel oil with the 507 00 spec, and do not use "fuel-economy" 0W-20). Do not overfill. Keep the level strictly between the MIN and MAX marks, because overfilling harms the catalytic converter and seals.
