Skoda Rapid (First Generation): Removing the Tail Light and Replacing Bulbs
The tail lights on the Rapid I are removed from inside the trunk. The bulbs sit in a removable board with sockets, so you don't need to remove the light itself to replace a bulb. The procedure does not depend on the engine or model year within this generation. The exact fastener layout and bulb numbers for your trim level are not well documented in public sources, so the general procedure is given below. Verify the details on your car.
Part
- 🔩 Tail light bulbs (brake/tail, turn signal, reverse) in the bulb holders on the tail light board. Confirm the bulb types from the old bulb or the marking on its base: typically a dual-filament P21/5W, an amber PY21W and a single-filament P21W. Complete tail light assembly (left and right are separate, and the outer one on the body and the inner one on the trunk lid are different parts): choose OE or aftermarket

Step by step
9 steps- Turn off the engine, the lights and the ignition. Open the trunk and, if needed, pull out the trunk mat and the side trim that covers the back of the tail light.
- Fold back or remove the trunk side trim near the tail light. It is held by plastic clips: pry carefully with the trim tool so you don't break the retainers.
- Find the bulb socket board on the back of the tail light. Press the retainers (usually two side clips or a tab), disconnect the wiring connector if there is one, and pull the board toward you.
- Replace the bulb: push it in, turn it a quarter turn counterclockwise (bayonet) and pull it out. Do not touch the glass with bare hands. Install a new bulb of the same wattage and type. Inspect the socket contacts: if they are oxidized, clean them and apply dielectric (conductive) grease.
- Reinstall the board until it clicks and check the brake light, tail light, turn signal and reverse light with the ignition on. Only then reinstall the trim, if you don't need to remove the light itself.
- To remove the tail light itself: after removing the board, undo the fasteners on the back. These are usually plastic nuts or screws around the edge of the housing. They have a low tightening torque, so tighten them by hand without jerking, to avoid cracking the plastic.
- Carefully pull the light back and away from the body: the studs come out of the guide bushings. Do not yank on the housing, or you will damage the retainers. The inner light on the trunk lid is removed the same way, but its fasteners are under the lid trim.
- Before installing, check the sealing gasket around the perimeter: if it is torn or hardened, replace it, otherwise water will get into the trunk.
- Place the light onto the studs, tighten the fasteners, insert the board, connect the connector and check all the light functions. Reinstall the trim.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not install bulbs of higher wattage than specified: the board and sockets will melt. If a bulb does not light after replacement, check the fuse and the ground connection. If bulbs burn out often or flicker, check the electrical system voltage and the condition of the socket contacts. If the turn signals flash faster than normal, it indicates a burned-out bulb. LED bulbs in place of the standard ones can trigger a fault warning and hyperflash until a load resistor is installed.
