SsangYong Rexton (1st generation, Y200/Y250): Battery Replacement
The battery is in the engine compartment, on the left side of the vehicle (driver's side on left-hand-drive models). Replacement is simple: disconnect the terminals, remove the hold-down, and install the new battery. After replacement, the clock, radio settings, power window memory and trip computer memory often reset. This is normal.
Part
- 🔩 12 V battery. For the 2.7 diesel, a capacity of 80-100 Ah with a cold cranking current of 700-800 A (EN) or more is usually suitable. It's best not to go below these figures, since a diesel is demanding on the battery in cold weather. Polarity and case dimensions must match the original battery: check the marking on the old battery and the position of the positive terminal

Step by step
14 steps- Shut off the engine, remove the key, and close the doors and windows. If the radio has an anti-theft code, find the code beforehand. Write down any settings that may be reset.
- Open the hood and locate the battery. If needed, remove the plastic cover or shroud over the terminals.
- Loosen the nut on the negative (-) terminal with a 10 mm wrench, remove the terminal, and move it aside so it can't touch the post. Always start with the negative.
- Loosen and remove the positive (+) terminal the same way. If there is a protective cap, flip it back.
- Unscrew the hold-down plate or bracket that secures the battery case at its base. Remove it and put the bolts in a safe place.
- Lift out the battery by holding the case, not the terminals. The battery is heavy, about 20-25 kg (44-55 lb). Lift it straight up without tilting it, so the electrolyte doesn't spill.
- Clean the mounting area and tray of dirt and corrosion. If the tray has been eaten away by acid, treat it with a baking soda solution, rinse it, and let it dry.
- Clean the terminals with a brush until bright, then wipe them dry. Check that the cables are not damaged or frayed.
- Place the new battery in the same position as the old one. Make sure the positive and negative posts are on the correct sides.
- Install the hold-down plate. Tighten it moderately so the battery doesn't move but the case isn't deformed.
- Connect the positive terminal first and tighten it. Then connect the negative terminal and tighten it. Don't overtighten, since lead posts deform easily. Apply a thin layer of grease to the terminals.
- Check the voltage with a multimeter: a new battery at rest should read about 12.5-12.8 V. Start the engine; with it running, the voltage at the terminals should be 13.8-14.5 V. A lower reading points to an alternator problem.
- The diesel may take slightly longer to start after the ECU has been reset. If warning lights appear on the instrument cluster, let the engine run for a few minutes. Then reset the clock, radio and power windows (if necessary, perform the auto-mode window initialization).
- Take the old battery to a recycling center or a store that accepts used batteries. It contains lead and acid and must not be thrown in the trash.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last. Otherwise, accidentally touching the body with a wrench can cause a short circuit and sparks. Do not smoke or use open flames near the battery, as it gives off explosive hydrogen. Wear gloves and safety glasses, since the electrolyte is corrosive. Exact torque specifications for the terminals and hold-down for this model are not documented in open sources. Tighten moderately, until secure and without deforming the lead posts.
