SsangYong Rexton 2.3 (2004): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The gasoline 2.3 in the Rexton I needs an oil and filter change about every 10,000 km or once a year. The job is done with a warm engine and comes down to draining the old oil, replacing the filter, and filling with fresh oil up to the mark on the dipstick.
Part
- 🔩 Engine oil meeting ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4, viscosity 5W-30 or 10W-40, about 6-7 L (6.3-7.4 qt). Oil filter for the gasoline 2.3 (G23D): look it up by VIN and engine in the catalog and choose a reputable brand. Drain plug sealing washer, if it is aluminum or copper

Step by step
14 steps- Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes so the oil becomes fluid. Do not let it get very hot, to avoid burns.
- Park the vehicle on a level surface or over a pit. Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain down into the oil pan.
- If there is an engine skid plate, remove it.
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This speeds up draining.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug and remove the plug. Hold it so the stream of oil does not get on your hands.
- Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes. Inspect the plug and its threads for damage.
- Place the pan under the oil filter and unscrew it counterclockwise with the filter wrench. Some oil remains in the filter, so keep it upright. Make sure the old gasket has not stayed behind on the mounting surface.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Lubricate the gasket of the new filter with fresh oil, and pour a little oil into the filter if it mounts vertically.
- Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface, then tighten it another 3/4 turn. Do not use the filter wrench for tightening.
- Install the drain plug with a new washer and tighten it with a torque wrench. Check the exact torque value against the service manual. For this type of plug it is usually 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, since the threads in an aluminum oil pan strip easily.
- Pour in 5.5 L (5.8 qt) of oil through the funnel, wait a couple of minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the upper mark. Do not overfill.
- Close the filler neck, start the engine, and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out 2-3 seconds after startup.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the level on the dipstick again. Inspect the filter and drain plug for leaks. Top up to the mark if necessary.
- Reinstall the skid plate. Take the used oil to a collection point for recycling.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Check the lubrication system capacity for your version by the dipstick, not by the volume of the container: go by the MAX mark. A hot engine can cause burns, so wear gloves when draining the oil. Do not let oil get on the belts or rubber parts.
