Abarth 124 Spider 1.4 MultiAir Turbo (2017): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

Change interval: every 15,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. On a turbocharged engine with the MultiAir system, it is important to use oil with the correct specification, because the cleanliness and viscosity of the oil affect the hydraulics that control the valves. Refill capacity with the filter is about 3.8 L (4.0 qt).

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil flows easily, then shut it off. Do not work on a fully hot engine: the oil and components are very hot.
  2. Park the car on level ground and raise it on a lift or set it on jack stands. Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels if they stay on the ground.
  3. Remove the lower engine undercover if one is fitted. Locate the drain plug on the oil pan and position the drain pan under it.
  4. Unscrew the plug and let the oil drain completely, which takes 10-15 minutes. At the same time, remove the oil filler cap on the engine so the oil drains faster.
  5. Remove the oil filter. If it is a spin-on type (canister), use a filter wrench. If it is a cartridge filter in a plastic housing, unscrew the housing cap, replace the cartridge and the seals supplied with it. The remaining oil will run out, so have rags ready.
  6. Wipe the mounting surface clean. On a new spin-on filter, lubricate the gasket with fresh oil and, if possible, fill the filter about one-third full of oil. Screw it on by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten about 3/4 of a turn by hand, without using a tool. For a cartridge filter, tighten the housing cap to the manufacturer's specification, usually 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft).
  7. Clean the drain plug, fit a new sealing washer, and screw the plug in. As a guideline, torque is 25-30 N·m (18-22 lb-ft) (check the exact value against the manufacturer's specification). Do not overtighten: the oil pan may have threads cut into aluminum.
  8. Reinstall the undercover if you removed it, and lower the car.
  9. Pour in about 3.5 L (3.7 qt) of oil, wait a minute, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark; the total should be roughly 3.8 L (4.0 qt). Do not overfill.
  10. Close the filler cap and run the engine for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light should go out right after startup. Inspect the filter and the drain plug for leaks.
  11. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the level on the dipstick again, topping up if necessary. Reset the service interval indicator through the instrument cluster menu, if equipped. Take the used oil and filter to a recycling facility.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use oil with the wrong specification or viscosity: the MultiAir system is sensitive to oil quality, and the turbocharger is lubricated by the same oil
  • Do not start the engine if the oil pressure light does not go out
  • If the drain plug threads spin without tightening, do not tighten further; take the car to a repair shop
