BMW X5 (1st generation, E53): Replacing the Tail Light Bulbs
The tail light bulbs on the E53 are replaced from inside the cargo area. You don't need to remove the light assembly. Just remove the access cover and pull out the bulb holder. Before you start, work out which bulb has failed. If the tail light or brake light has burned out, replace the whole dual-filament bulb. If the turn signal is out, replace the amber PY21W bulb.

Step by step
9 steps- Turn off the ignition and all lights and electrical consumers. Open the tailgate and look at the side trim panels in the cargo area.
- On the affected side, find the access cover or hatch in the trim opposite the tail light. Open it, or gently pry it loose with a plastic trim pry tool. Don't use force, or you may break the clips.
- Find the bulb holder (bulb carrier) of the tail light. Press in the retaining tabs or turn the fastener. The method depends on the model year. Pull the holder toward you.
- Inspect the bulbs and contacts. If the contacts are corroded or show signs of melting, clean them with fine sandpaper or electrical contact cleaner.
- Push the bulb into the holder, turn it counterclockwise a small amount, and pull it out. Bulbs with BAY15d and BAU15s bayonet bases have offset pins, so they can't be installed the wrong way.
- Insert a new bulb of the same type: a dual-filament P21/5W for the tail light and brake light, or an amber PY21W for the turn signal. Don't touch the glass with your fingers, because skin oil shortens the bulb's life.
- Put the holder back until the retaining tabs click. Make sure the seal sits tightly in the light housing, or moisture will get into the light.
- Test the lights before you put the cover back. Turn on the ignition, the parking lights and the hazard lights. Ask a helper to press the brake pedal, and check the rear lights.
- Put the cover and trim back. Repeat the same steps on the other side if needed.
Common mistakes and warnings
- If the new bulb doesn't light, check the fuse and the holder contacts
- A lighting circuit fault on the E53 can be related to the light control module (LCM)
- Use only bulbs of the specified wattage: higher-wattage bulbs overheat the holder and melt the light housing
- The exact layout of the holder mounting differs between model years, so release the retaining tabs without force
