Changan Hunter Plus (I generation): Low Beam Bulb Replacement

On the Hunter Plus, the low beam bulb is serviced from the engine compartment through the rear cover of the headlight. Trim levels differ in their headlight optics, so first make sure your headlight actually uses a replaceable halogen bulb. Replace the bulbs in pairs so the light has the same brightness and color on both sides.

  • Clean gloves or a clean cloth
  • flat-blade screwdriver (for the cover retaining clips)
  • 8-10 mm socket if needed (in case the air intake housing or reservoir is in the way)

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Shut off the engine, turn off the lights and ignition, and let the bulb cool for 10-15 minutes. Open the hood and secure it.
  2. Locate the rear cover on the back of the headlight unit. If necessary, move or remove anything in the way: the air intake duct, a cover, or a reservoir. Access to the left and right headlights differs.
  3. Remove the rubber or plastic cover. It either unscrews with a quarter turn or comes off its clips.
  4. Disconnect the power connector from the bulb base. Press the retaining tab and pull the connector toward you. Do not yank on the wires.
  5. Release the bulb. Depending on the type, it is held by either a spring clip (press it down and swing it aside) or a bayonet mount (turn the bulb counterclockwise a small angle). Carefully remove the bulb.
  6. Compare the new bulb with the old one for base type, wattage, and the position of the tabs. Do not touch the glass bulb with your fingers. If you do, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
  7. Install the bulb in its seat using the alignment tabs. It must sit evenly, without tilting. Secure it with the spring clip, or turn it clockwise until it stops.
  8. Plug in the connector until it clicks. Briefly switch on the low beams and check that the bulb works.
  9. Put the cover back in place. It must seat tightly against the seal, otherwise moisture will get into the headlight and the lens will fog up. Reinstall any engine compartment parts you removed.
  10. Repeat the procedure on the other headlight. Tighten the engine compartment fasteners without excessive force. Torque values are not specified for them.
  11. Check both low beams against a wall or garage door. If the beam pattern looks uneven after the replacement, check the headlight aim.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not switch on the new bulb outside the headlight, and do not touch the bulb with bare hands
  • Oil from your fingers greatly shortens bulb life
  • If the bulb does not light after replacement, check the low beam fuse and relay in the fuse box in the engine compartment or under the dashboard
  • If the headlights are LED or the bulb is built into the unit, you cannot replace it yourself
  • Take the car to a repair shop to avoid damaging the electronics and optics
