Geely Atlas Pro 1.5 Turbo 177 hp (2022): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

Manufacturer's schedule: change the oil and filter every 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. For the 1.5 Turbo engine, use full synthetic oil. Take the viscosity and specification from the service booklet or from the sticker on the oil filler cap. The exact fill capacity is not reliably confirmed in publicly available sources: use 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt) as a guideline and go by the dipstick mark for the final level.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 11 Tools: car lift or inspection pit, socket for the drain plug (check the size on your plug), oil filter wrench (strap or cup type), torque wrench, drain pan of at least 5 L (5.3 qt), funnel, gloves, shop rags

Part

  • 🔩 oil filter for the Geely 1.5 Turbo engine (verify the exact part number in the catalog), new drain plug washer, full synthetic engine oil, about 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt)

Step by step

11 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes so the oil becomes thin. Park the car on level ground or a lift and shut off the engine. Wait 5 minutes so some of the oil drains down into the oil pan.
  2. Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This speeds up draining.
  3. If the car has an engine skid plate (undercover), remove it (the fasteners depend on the trim level). Place the drain pan under the drain plug in the oil pan.
  4. Remove the drain plug, being careful because the oil is hot. Drain the oil completely and let it drip for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Clean the plug and its seat, and replace the sealing washer. Install the plug without overtightening: the oil pan may be aluminum and the threads strip easily. Tightening torque is approximately 25-40 N·m (18-30 lb-ft); check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual.
  6. Place the pan under the oil filter and remove the filter with the filter wrench. Residual oil from the filter housing will run down. If your version has a cartridge-type filter in a plastic housing, replace the seal ring along with the cartridge, and tighten the housing to the torque specified on the cap or in the service manual.
  7. Wipe the mounting surface. Lubricate the new filter's sealing ring with clean oil, and if the filter mounts upright, fill it with a little fresh oil. Spin the filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten it about 3/4 of a turn further unless the filter states otherwise. Do not overtighten with a tool.
  8. Pour about 4 L (4.2 qt) of oil into the filler neck, wait 2-3 minutes, and check the level on the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to a level between MIN and MAX, closer to MAX but not above it.
  9. Close the filler cap and run the engine for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out within a couple of seconds. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter.
  10. Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, and recheck the dipstick level, topping up if needed. Install the skid plate.
  11. Take the used oil to a collection point for recycling. Do not pour it down a drain or onto the ground. If the instrument cluster or menu has a service interval reset, reset it according to the vehicle's owner's manual.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not overfill the oil: the excess foams and causes problems with the turbocharger and the crankcase ventilation. If the oil is heavily diluted with fuel (a strong gasoline smell, or the level rising between changes) or you see emulsion, take the car to a repair shop for diagnosis. The 1.5 Turbo engine is sensitive to oil quality, so do not skimp on oil or stretch the interval. If the car is under warranty, keep your receipts and service records.
