Haval M6 (1st generation): Engine Air Filter Replacement

On the Haval M6 1.5 Turbo, the air filter is replaced per the maintenance schedule about every 30,000 km or every 2 years. If you drive in dusty conditions (unpaved roads, construction sites, dusty city driving), cut the interval in half. The job is simple and needs no removal of other components.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10-15 minutes Steps: 10 Tools: Usually none needed (the housing uses clips); in case the cover has screws, a Phillips screwdriver or an 8-10 mm socket, a dry rag, and a vacuum cleaner or compressed air for cleaning the housing

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Shut off the engine, let the engine bay cool down, open the hood, and secure it with the prop rod.
  2. Locate the black plastic air filter housing at the front of the engine bay. An air duct runs from it to the throttle body/turbocharger.
  3. Inspect the cover: it is held by retaining clips and/or several screws around the perimeter. Release the clips (pry them up with a finger) and remove the screws, if there are any.
  4. Lift the cover and move it aside. Do not disconnect the duct or the mass airflow/temperature sensor connector (if one is mounted on the cover or duct) unless necessary. If it is in the way, carefully press the connector lock and unplug it. Do not pull on the wires.
  5. Note the position of the old filter and remove it from the housing. Try not to shake dust into the air duct.
  6. Clean the inside of the housing with a dry rag or vacuum cleaner, especially the bottom and the seating groove for the seal. Do not leave any debris near the outlet to the turbocharger.
  7. Compare the new filter with the old one (size, shape, rubber seal around the perimeter). Install it in the housing evenly, without tilting, so the seal seats tightly all the way around.
  8. Put the cover back on and check that it sits without gaps. Snap all the clips shut and tighten the screws (if there were any) without excessive force, since the housing is plastic.
  9. Reconnect the sensor connector if you removed it, and check that the clamps and air duct hoses have not shifted.
  10. Start the engine and listen for unusual noises (a whistle from an air leak). Make sure no warning lights or errors appear on the instrument cluster. Close the hood.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not run the engine without a filter or with a loosely fitted cover. Unfiltered dust quickly damages the turbocharger and the cylinder and piston group. Do not use low-restriction (high-flow) filters without a proven filtration quality guarantee. If the filter is heavily soaked with oil or there are traces of oil in the housing, check the crankcase ventilation system.
