Hyundai Tucson 2.0 G4NA 165 hp (2020): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The maintenance schedule for this engine calls for an oil and filter change every 10,000 km or once a year, and more often under severe driving conditions. The refill capacity including the filter is about 4.5 L (4.8 qt). The job is easier on a warm engine on a level surface.

Step by step
12 steps- Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes, shut it off and wait 5 minutes. Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. If needed, raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands, not on a jack alone.
- Remove the plastic engine undercover if one is installed. To do this, remove the retaining screws or bolts.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug. Open the oil filler cap so the oil drains faster.
- Remove the drain plug with a 17 mm wrench. Hold onto it so it does not fall into the hot oil. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, locate the oil filter on the front of the engine block. Place a rag or pan underneath, because the remaining oil will run out of the housing. Remove the filter or housing cap with a suitable socket or filter wrench.
- If the filter is a cartridge type, replace the paper element and the rubber O-rings on the cap. If it is a spin-on filter, lubricate the new gasket with clean oil. Wipe the housing and the mounting surface clean.
- Install the cap or filter. Tighten the cap of a cartridge-type housing with a torque wrench to the torque marked on the cap itself or given in the service manual. Tighten a spin-on filter by hand until the gasket contacts the surface, then turn it about 3/4 of a turn further. Do not use a wrench with excessive force.
- Clean the plug and the oil pan mounting surface. Install a new gasket and tighten the plug to 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft).
- Pour in about 4 L (4.2 qt) of oil. Wait a couple of minutes, check the level with the dipstick, and add oil in small amounts until it is between the MIN and MAX marks, closer to MAX. Close the filler cap.
- Start the engine and run it for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within a few seconds. Inspect the drain plug and filter: there should be no leaks.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes and check the level again. Top up if necessary.
- Reinstall the engine undercover. Reset the maintenance interval counter through the instrument cluster menu, if your trim level has one. Take the used oil to a recycling facility.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not overtighten the drain plug: the threads in the aluminum oil pan strip easily
- Do not overfill the oil above the MAX mark
- Make sure the gasket of the old spin-on filter does not stay stuck on the mounting surface: a double gasket causes a severe leak
- Hot oil and the exhaust manifold can cause burns, so wear gloves and do not touch hot parts
