Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DIG-T H5Ht (2021): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The H5Ht engine (1.3 DIG-T, 158 hp) takes about 5.4 L (5.7 qt) of oil with a filter change (about 5 L (5.3 qt) without a filter change). The change interval is 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. For severe service (city driving, heavy traffic, short trips), it is better to shorten the interval. The filter is installed by hand and does not need high torque.

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm the engine to operating temperature (5-10 minutes), then shut it off and wait 5-10 minutes so the oil drains down into the oil pan but stays warm and fluid.
  2. Park the car on level ground, set the parking brake, and raise it on a lift or support it on reliable jack stands. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  3. If the car has an engine skid plate, remove it by undoing the fasteners. Locate the drain plug on the oil pan and the oil filter.
  4. Place the drain pan under the drain hole, remove the oil filler cap on the engine (for better draining), remove the drain plug, and let the oil drain completely (10-15 minutes). Be careful: the oil is hot.
  5. Move the pan under the filter and unscrew the old oil filter with the filter wrench. The remaining oil will run out of it.
  6. Wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine. Make sure the old rubber gasket is not stuck to it. Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter with clean engine oil. If possible, pour a little oil into the new filter (only if it sits in a position where the oil will not spill out).
  7. Thread the new filter on by hand until you feel light resistance, then tighten it about 2/3 of a turn more. Do not overtighten it with the filter wrench.
  8. Clean the drain plug and its threads, install a new sealing washer, and tighten the plug. The torque for an aluminum oil pan is usually in the range of 20-30 N·m (15-22 lb-ft); check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual. Do not overtighten, to avoid stripping the threads in the pan.
  9. Pour about 4.5-5 L (4.8-5.3 qt) of oil through the filler neck, wait a couple of minutes, then check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark (total capacity is about 5.4 L (5.7 qt) with the filter), but not above it.
  10. Close the oil filler cap and run the engine for 30-60 seconds. Make sure the oil pressure warning light goes out. Inspect the filter and drain plug for leaks.
  11. Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, and recheck the oil level on level ground, topping up if necessary. Reinstall the skid plate.
  12. Reset the maintenance interval counter through the instrument cluster or infotainment menu (the procedure depends on trim level). Take the used oil to a collection point for recycling.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only oil that meets ACEA C3 (viscosity 5W-30)
  • A turbocharged, direct-injection engine is sensitive to oil quality and ash content
  • Do not overfill: excess oil is harmful to the engine and can cause oil to get into the intake
  • If you do not have experience working under a vehicle or do not have a safe way to lift it, have a repair shop do the job
