Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVT-i (2007): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 1.6 VVT-i (1ZR-FE) engine's lubrication system is serviced by changing the oil and filter. Change interval: 7,500-10,000 km (4,700-6,200 mi) or once a year. Clean oil also matters for the variable valve timing (VVT-i) mechanism, which is controlled by oil pressure.

Step by step
11 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes, shut it off and wait about 5 minutes so the oil drains down. Park the car on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Raise the front of the car onto jack stands or drive over a pit. If there is an engine undercover (skid plate), remove it.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan. Remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover so the oil drains faster.
- Remove the oil pan drain plug and let the oil drain completely (about 10-15 minutes). Be careful: the oil is hot.
- Clean the plug and its seating surface, and replace the sealing washer. Install the plug and tighten it to approximately 35-40 N·m (26-30 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, as the oil pan is aluminum.
- Place the drain pan under the oil filter and remove the filter with the filter wrench. Wipe leftover oil from the mounting surface.
- If the filter is a spin-on type: lubricate the new filter's rubber gasket with fresh oil, thread it on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten about another 3/4 turn (follow the marking on the filter). Do not overtighten with a wrench. If the filter is a cartridge type (replaceable element in a housing), replace the element and the housing O-ring, and tighten the housing cap to the torque specified on it or in the service manual.
- Add oil through the funnel: first about 3.5 L (3.7 qt), wait a minute, then check the level with the dipstick. The total capacity for an oil change with a filter is approximately 4.0-4.3 L (4.2-4.5 qt); use the dipstick for the final amount.
- Close the oil filler cap and run the engine for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light should go out within 1-2 seconds. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick on level ground. It should be between the marks, closer to the upper one. Top off if necessary.
- Reinstall the engine undercover and lower the car. Take the used oil to a recycling collection point.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not fill the oil above the upper mark: this causes foaming and pushes oil out through the crankcase ventilation
- If the oil pressure light does not go out or comes on while the engine is running, shut off the engine immediately
- If you need to drain the oil with the car raised on a jack, always use jack stands for safety, not just the jack
