Toyota Crown 2.5 (1JZ-FSE, 2002): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The 1JZ-FSE is a direct-injection (D-4) gasoline engine and is sensitive to oil quality: on short trips the oil gets diluted with fuel and becomes contaminated faster. Change the oil and filter every 5,000-7,000 km or every 6 months. For city driving and heavy traffic, stay closer to 5,000 km.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 13 Tools: Drain plug wrench (usually 14 or 17 mm, check against your plug), oil filter wrench (strap or cup type), ratchet with sockets, drain pan of 6 L (6.3 qt) or larger, funnel, rags, jack with jack stands or an inspection pit

Part

  • 🔩 Synthetic engine oil, viscosity 5W-30 or 0W-30 (API SL or higher), about 5-6 L (5.3-6.3 qt) (check the exact amount with the dipstick). Oil filter suitable for the 1JZ-FSE (genuine Toyota or aftermarket Vic, Sakura, Mann, Bosch), and a new aluminum or copper drain plug gasket

Step by step

13 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil flows easily, then shut it off. Do not drain fully hot oil, to avoid burns.
  2. Park the car on level ground or over a pit. If you lift it with a jack, always put jack stands under the body. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  3. Remove the engine undercover (skid plate), if installed.
  4. Remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover to speed up draining. Place the drain pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Inspect the plug and its threads. Replace the plug gasket with a new one and wipe metal debris off the plug. Install the plug and tighten it moderately, approximate torque 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft) (verify the exact value against the manufacturer's specification). Do not overtighten, the oil pan is aluminum.
  6. Locate the oil filter on the cylinder block. Position the drain pan or rags under it, since the remaining oil will spill out. Unscrew the old filter with the filter wrench.
  7. Wipe the filter mounting surface on the block and make sure no old rubber gasket is stuck to it.
  8. Lubricate the new filter's sealing ring with fresh oil and, if you like, pour a little oil into the filter. Thread the filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten about 3/4 of a turn more. Do not overtighten with a tool.
  9. Pour in fresh oil, first about 4.5 L (4.8 qt). Wait a minute, check the level with the dipstick and top up to the MAX mark. Do not overfill above the mark.
  10. Close the filler opening and run the engine for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light should go out 1-2 seconds after startup. If the light stays on longer, shut off the engine immediately and check the level and the filter.
  11. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes and check the level with the dipstick, topping up if needed. Check the drain plug and filter for leaks.
  12. Reinstall the engine undercover. Take the used oil to a recycling collection point. Do not pour it down a drain or onto the ground.
  13. While servicing, also check: the condition of the crankcase ventilation (PCV) hoses and the PCV valve, leaks at the seals and the valve cover gasket, and the color of the oil (emulsion or a gasoline smell indicates a problem and requires diagnosis).

Common mistakes and warnings

  • If the oil pressure light comes on with a warm engine, the oil smells strongly of fuel, or the oil level rises on its own, do not keep driving. Have the car checked by a mechanic: on direct-injection engines this indicates a fuel system fault or wear. Do not use oil of a viscosity not recommended for the engine, and do not use cheap mineral oils, as they quickly form carbon and deposits.
