Toyota Sienta 1.5 (2NR-FKE) (2019): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
On the 2NR-FKE, the oil and filter are changed about every 10,000 km or once a year, and more often if you drive mostly in city traffic or make short trips. The engine is designed for low-viscosity oil, so do not use a thicker grade such as 5W-40 unless the maintenance schedule calls for it. The job is simple. The main thing is not to overtighten the drain plug or the filter.
Part
- 🔩 engine oil 0W-16 or 0W-20 (API SP/ILSAC GF-6, or as recommended in the owner's manual for your market), oil filter for the 2NR-FKE engine (OE Toyota or aftermarket Denso, Vic, Sakura), new drain plug gasket (crush washer). Fill capacity with filter change is about 3.4-3.7 L (3.6-3.9 qt)
Step by step
12 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil flows easily, then shut it off. Do not drain the oil right away while it is hot. Wait 5-10 minutes to avoid burns.
- Park the car on a level surface, set the parking brake, and raise it on a lift or set it on jack stands. If there is an underbody skid plate, remove it.
- Open the oil filler cap on the engine so the oil drains better.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan, remove the drain plug, and let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes. Make sure the plug does not fall into the pan.
- While it drains, move the pan under the oil filter and unscrew the filter with the filter wrench. The old gasket should come off together with the filter. Check that no old seal remains on the mounting surface.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface and the drain plug threads clean. Inspect the plug threads for damage.
- Lubricate the new filter's gasket with fresh oil and, if the filter sits upright or can otherwise be filled, fill it with oil. Screw it on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten about 3/4 of a turn more. Check the exact tightening specification for your filter type on the filter itself or on its packaging, and do not overtighten.
- Fit a new washer on the drain plug and install the plug. The torque is usually 35-40 N·m (26-30 lb-ft); confirm the exact value in the manufacturer's specifications. Do not tighten it all the way "until it stops." The threads in the aluminum oil pan strip easily.
- Pour in about 3 L (3.2 qt) of oil through the funnel, wait a minute, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts until the level is between the minimum and maximum marks.
- Close the oil filler cap and run the engine for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within a few seconds of starting. Check the filter and drain plug for leaks.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan, and check the dipstick level again. Top up if needed, but do not go above the upper mark.
- Reinstall the skid plate if you removed it. Reset the oil change reminder on the instrument cluster if your car has one (the procedure depends on the trim level). Take the used oil and filter to a recycling facility.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not fill oil above the upper mark on the dipstick. Excess oil causes foaming and higher oil consumption. Use only oil of the correct viscosity and specification, otherwise you risk increased wear and worse fuel economy. If the oil pressure light comes on after the change or you find a leak, shut off the engine immediately. Work under the car only on reliable supports, never on a jack alone.
