KGM Korando 1.5T G15TF (2025): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The 1.5T G15TF is a turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine, and it is sensitive to oil quality and viscosity. The oil is changed by draining it from the oil pan, and the filter and the drain plug sealing washer must always be replaced. The interval is usually 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 miles) or once a year. Under severe use (city driving, heavy traffic, short trips), it is best not to exceed 10,000 km (6,000 miles).

Difficulty: Easy Time: 40-60 minutes Steps: 15 Tools: Wrench or socket for the drain plug, oil filter puller or socket (type depends on the filter version), socket or bit for the skid plate (Torx or 10-13 mm socket), drain pan of 6+ L (6.3 qt), funnel, torque wrench, rags, gloves, lift or inspection pit (or reliable jack stands)

Part

  • 🔩 Synthetic engine oil, viscosity and approval as specified by the manufacturer for the G15TF (usually 5W-30 or 0W-30 meeting ACEA C2/C3; check the exact requirement on the oil filler cap and in the owner's manual), fill capacity with filter approximately 4-5 L (4.2-5.3 qt). Oil filter for the G15TF engine (genuine KGM or a quality aftermarket filter from Mann, Mahle or Bosch), new drain plug sealing washer

Step by step

15 steps
  1. Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes to normal operating temperature so the oil thins out and drains better. Shut off the engine and wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  2. Park the car level on a lift or over an inspection pit. If you use jack stands, raise the body only at the factory lift points and add a safety backup. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  3. Remove the skid plate if one is installed. To do this, remove the fasteners and hold the plate so it does not fall.
  4. Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. This speeds up draining and prevents a vacuum from forming.
  5. Place the drain pan under the drain plug, remove the plug with a wrench, and let the oil drain completely, usually 10-15 minutes. The oil is hot, so protect your hands.
  6. Inspect the plug and its threads. Replace the sealing washer with a new one. If there is a lot of metal shavings on the plug, that is a reason to have the engine diagnosed.
  7. Wipe the sealing surface clean and tighten the drain plug. The torque is not clearly documented in publicly available sources. A typical figure for plugs of this type is 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft), so check the value against the manufacturer's service data. Do not overtighten, as the oil pan may be aluminum.
  8. Place the drain pan under the oil filter and remove the filter. If it is a paper element in a plastic housing (cartridge type), open the cap with a socket, pull out the element, and replace the O-rings. If it is a spin-on filter, unscrew it with a filter wrench. Drain any remaining oil from the housing.
  9. Lubricate the seal of the new filter with fresh oil. Install the filter or cartridge, tighten it by hand, and then tighten further according to the markings on the housing. Tighten the cartridge filter cap with a torque wrench to the value shown on the cap itself or in the service data.
  10. Reinstall the skid plate.
  11. Pour in about 4 L (4.2 qt) of fresh oil through a funnel, wait 2-3 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts until the level is between MIN and MAX, closer to MAX. Do not overfill.
  12. Close the oil filler cap. Start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure warning light should go out within 1-2 seconds after startup.
  13. Shut off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the level on the dipstick again. Inspect the plug and filter for leaks, and add oil if necessary.
  14. Reset the service interval counter through the instrument cluster menu, if the car has this feature.
  15. Take the used oil and old filter to a collection point. Do not pour them down a drain or onto the ground.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Use only oil that meets the approval required by the manufacturer. Otherwise, problems with the turbocharger and the direct-injection fuel system are possible, including accelerated wear and a risk of detonation (LSPI). Do not overtighten the drain plug or the filter. If the car is under warranty, keep the receipt and documents for the oil and filter to avoid problems with warranty claims.
