Kia Rio 1.6 MPI (2022): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
For the 1.6 MPI (123 hp), the factory recommendation is full synthetic SAE 5W-20 oil meeting the latest API/ILSAC classification. The fill capacity is about 3.6 L (3.8 qt). If you use mineral or semi-synthetic oil, shorten the change intervals to the severe-service schedule.
Part
- 🔩 Oil filter for the 1.6 MPI engine (Gamma family) and a drain plug sealing washer. Engine oil: full synthetic, about 3.6 L (3.8 qt)

Step by step
13 steps- Warm up the engine for 3-5 minutes, then shut it off. Hot oil drains better, but be careful: the oil and the oil pan can get very hot.
- Park the car on level ground. Raise it on a lift or set it on jack stands. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
- If the plastic engine undercover is in the way, remove it.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan. Unscrew the oil filler cap on the valve cover so the oil drains faster.
- Unscrew the drain plug and let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- Replace the plug's sealing washer. Wipe the threads and the sealing seat. Install the plug and tighten it with a torque wrench. Check the exact value against the manufacturer's specification; the typical range for pans like this is about 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft). Do not overtighten, because the oil pan is aluminum.
- Place the pan under the oil filter and remove the filter with the filter wrench. The location depends on the trim and equipment; if needed, remove the undercover or plastic shield that is in the way. Make sure the old filter's sealing ring is not left stuck on the engine block mounting surface.
- Lubricate the rubber gasket of the new filter with fresh oil. If the filter sits in a position that allows it, you can pre-fill it with a little oil. Spin it on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten about 3/4 of a turn more (if the filter specifies a different angle, follow that). Do not overtighten with a tool.
- Pour in about 3.0-3.2 L (3.2-3.4 qt) of oil and wait a couple of minutes. Check the level with the dipstick and add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark. In total, about 3.6 L (3.8 qt) is usually needed; with a filter change it may take slightly less or more.
- Close the oil filler cap. Start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within 1-2 seconds after startup.
- Shut off the engine and wait 5-10 minutes. Check the dipstick level (with the car on level ground) and inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks. Top up if needed.
- Reinstall the engine undercover. Take the used oil to a collection point; do not pour it onto the ground.
- Reset the service reminder if your car has one. Write down the mileage of the oil change.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not overfill the oil above the MAX mark: the excess foams and can get into the crankcase ventilation system. If you notice a burning smell, a leak, an illuminated oil pressure light, or knocking after the change, shut off the engine immediately and take the car to a repair shop. For service intervals, follow your owner's manual and service booklet: typically every 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 miles) or once a year under normal conditions, and more often with city driving in heavy traffic, short trips, and dusty conditions.
