Lada Iskra: Diagnosing Front Seat Knocking and Squeaking

Seat knocking is most often caused by loose seat rail mounting to the floor, play in the adjustment mechanism, or plastic covers contacting the frame. On new vehicles, noises from nearby components are also often to blame, such as the floor tunnel or console plastic. So first we locate the source, then tighten the fasteners and eliminate the friction points.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-2 hours Steps: 10 Tools: socket set and ratchet, Torx bit set, screwdriver, torque wrench, plastic trim pry tool, soft padding, flashlight, fabric or felt tape, copper or lithium grease

Part

  • 🔩 Consumables as needed: self-adhesive felt tape (anti-squeak), a set of seat rail mounting bolts (only if the threads are damaged or the splines are stripped), plastic plugs and guides for the seat rail covers

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Locate the noise. Sit in the seat and rock your body back and forth, then have a helper press on the seatback and cushion while the car is stationary. A knock coming from the seat itself can be reproduced by hand. If you can't reproduce it, look for the cause in the floor tunnel, console, or armrest.
  2. Clear the cabin: remove the floor mats and any items under the seat. Slide the seat all the way forward to expose the rear rail bolts, then all the way back to access the front bolts.
  3. Inspect the bolts that secure the seat rails to the floor (4 points per seat) and the plastic covers. Check for gaps, signs of rubbing, and worn paint around the bolts.
  4. Tighten the mounting bolts with a torque wrench. The exact torque for this model is not confirmed in public sources. For seat bolts, a range of 20-45 N·m (15-33 lb-ft) is typically used, so tighten moderately, without jerking, and do not exceed the typical range. Do not strip the threads in the floor.
  5. Check the seat rails for play: grip the cushion and move it up and down and side to side. Slight play in the guides can be reduced with lubricant. Heavy play indicates wear and requires replacing the seat rails or the seat under warranty.
  6. Lubricate the seat rail guides and the pivots of the seatback/height adjustment mechanism with a thin paste-type grease, avoiding contact with the upholstery and the seat belts.
  7. If the knock is coming from the seatback: check the seatback-to-cushion attachment and the recliner mechanism. Remove the plastic side trim panels (pry them off with the trim tool; the fasteners are underneath) and tighten the pivot bolts.
  8. Eliminate plastic-to-plastic contact: insert strips of self-adhesive felt tape between the cover and the frame, under the trim pieces, and wherever the upholstery touches metal.
  9. If the seat has a heating function, before removing the upholstery or covers, disconnect the negative battery terminal and carefully unplug the connectors under the seat. If the seat has a side airbag, it is better to leave the work to a repair shop.
  10. Reassemble, check that the adjustments and seat belts work properly, and rock the seat again if needed. If the knock persists, check the mounting of the floor tunnel and the plastic console components, as well as the front suspension control arms to the subframe. Loose fasteners there can also produce knocks that seem to come from the seats.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Seats are linked to the seat belts and, possibly, to the airbags. If the seat has a built-in side airbag or sensor, do not disassemble it without experience, and disconnect the battery at least 5 minutes before starting work. For a vehicle under warranty, it is better to have the knock fixed free of charge by an authorized dealer: AvtoVAZ runs service campaigns to check the mounting of the floor tunnel, suspension, and interior components. Doing the work yourself may complicate warranty claims.
