Lada Vesta 1.6 16V (VAZ-21129) (2018): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
On the VAZ-21129, change the oil and filter every 15,000 km or once a year. Under severe use (city driving, heavy traffic, short trips), change them more often. Do the job with the engine warm, preferably with the car on a lift, ramps, or over a pit.
Parts
3| № | Part | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Engine oil, synthetic, ACEA A3/B4about 3.5-4.5 L (3.7-4.8 qt) depending on the oil pan | |
| 02 | Oil filter for engines | Mann, Bosch, Filtron |
| 03 | Copper drain plug sealing washer |
Tools
7- Drain plug wrench (hex key or socket, size depends on the plug)
- oil filter wrench (strap or cap type)
- torque wrench
- funnel
- drain pan of at least 5 L (5.3 qt)
- gloves
- shop rags
Step by step
11 steps- Warm up the engine for 5-10 minutes so the oil becomes thin. Shut off the engine, park the car on level ground, and set the parking brake. If necessary, remove the engine undercover.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug on the oil pan. Remove the oil filler cap on the cylinder head cover so the oil drains faster.
- Carefully unscrew the drain plug. The oil is hot, so protect your hands. Let it drain for 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, position the pan under the filter and unscrew it counterclockwise with the filter wrench. Pour the remaining oil from the filter into the pan.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface on the block and make sure no old gasket is left on it.
- Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with fresh oil and, if possible, fill the filter 1/2 to 2/3 full of oil. Screw the filter on by hand until the seal touches the mounting surface, then tighten it about another 3/4 turn. Do not overtighten with a tool.
- Clean the drain plug, install a new copper washer, and tighten the plug. Tightening torque is 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft) (check the exact value in the manufacturer's service manual). Do not strip the threads in the aluminum oil pan.
- Using a funnel, pour in about 3.5 L (3.7 qt) of oil, wait a couple of minutes for it to drain into the pan, and check the level with the dipstick. Add oil in small amounts up to the MAX mark. The total capacity depends on the oil pan type (stamped or cast): as a guide, 3.5-4.5 L (3.7-4.8 qt) including the filter.
- Close the filler neck with its cap. Start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure warning light should go out 1-2 seconds after startup.
- Shut off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick: it should be between MIN and MAX, closer to MAX. Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks, and top off if necessary.
- Take the used oil and filter to a recycling collection point. Reset the service interval counter if your instrument cluster has one.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not fill above the MAX mark: excess oil foams and increases oil consumption
- Always replace the copper washer on the drain plug, because the old one loses its seal
- Use oil with an approval suitable for the VAZ-21129, and do not mix different types without need
