Renault Kaptur (1st generation): Replacing Bulbs and Repairing Front Headlights and Parking Lights
On a Kaptur with halogen headlights, the bulbs are replaced from the engine compartment through the sockets on the back of the headlight assembly. If a bulb does not light, check the fuse and connector first. Repairing the housing (cracks, fogging, broken mounts) usually requires removing the headlight. Match the type of each bulb to the marking on the base of the removed bulb and to the designation on the cover. On some trim levels the parking lights are LEDs, and in that case the bulbs cannot be replaced separately.

Tools
5- Torx and Phillips screwdrivers
- 8-10 mm sockets
- plastic trim removal tools for clips
- clean gloves or a cloth
- multimeter (for diagnostics)
Step by step
12 steps- Turn off the engine and the lights, then wait 10-15 minutes for the bulbs to cool. Open the hood. You do not need to disconnect the battery to replace a bulb. But if you are removing the entire headlight, disconnect the negative terminal.
- Inspect the headlight and find the faulty bulb. Determine which one is out: low beam, high beam, parking light or turn signal. If several bulbs are out at once, check the fuses in the cabin fuse box and the under-hood fuse box. Then check the connectors for corrosion.
- Remove the rubber or plastic covers on the back of the headlight. The low beam cover is usually round and either twists off or pulls off with some force. If an air duct or hose is in the way, carefully move it aside or unclip it without breaking anything.
- Replacing the H7 low beam bulb: disconnect the connector, press down or swing aside the spring retainer, and pull the bulb straight back out without tilting it. Hold the new bulb only by its base and do not touch the glass with your hands. If you do touch it, wipe the glass with rubbing alcohol. Insert the bulb into its seat, aligning the tabs, and secure it with the spring, then plug in the connector.
- Replacing the high beam and parking light bulbs: turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it out of the headlight. Pull the W5W bulb out of its socket without twisting. If the bulb has a bayonet base, push it in, turn it slightly and pull it out. Install the socket back with even pressure.
- Turn signal bulb: the socket turns the same way as the parking light socket. Before installing, check the bulb color and type (an amber or clear bulb depends on the headlight version).
- Put the covers back and make sure the seal sits evenly around the entire perimeter. Otherwise moisture will get into the headlight and it will fog up.
- Turn on the lights and check all functions: parking lights, low beam, high beam, turn signals and hazard lights. If a bulb goes out right away or burns out again, check the voltage at the connector with a multimeter and the condition of the contacts (melting, corrosion).
- Removing the headlight assembly (for a crack, fogging or broken mounts): disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the radiator grille and the upper trim strip (release the clips with a plastic trim tool). If necessary, remove the front bumper fasteners in the wheel arches and on top. Remove the headlight mounting bolts (usually three or four, 8-10 mm socket or Torx). Pull the headlight forward, disconnect the connectors and take it out.
- Bench repair of the headlight: for fogging, dry it out, for example with a hair dryer on low heat, and check the sealant and covers. For a cracked housing, it is more reliable to replace the complete headlight assembly. The sealant usually needs to be softened with heat when opening the headlight, and the optics must not be overheated. If the mounting tabs are broken, use a repair kit or replace the headlight.
- Install the headlight in reverse order. Tighten the fasteners moderately, about 5-10 N·m (4-7 lb-ft) (the exact value depends on the bolt; do not use much force, because the plastic tabs are brittle). Check the gaps with the hood and fender, which should be even.
- After removing or replacing a headlight, check the beam aim: park the car on level ground with tire pressure correct and a light load. Set the in-cabin adjuster to the zero position. It is best to check the beam on an aiming rig at a repair shop.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with your fingers, and replace bulbs in pairs (both headlights) so the light is even
- For xenon and LED headlights (if equipped), the high voltage of the ignition unit is dangerous, so leave work on it to a repair shop
- Non-standard bulbs (LED instead of halogen) without lenses and a leveling adjuster blind oncoming drivers and may fail the vehicle inspection
