SsangYong Kyron 2.0 D20DT (2007): Engine Control Unit Replacement

On the SsangYong Kyron with the D20DT diesel, the engine control unit is located under the front passenger seat. Replacement requires mandatory VIN and immobilizer programming with a dealer scan tool or compatible equipment. Typical reasons for replacement are failure of the ignition coil output stage, a short circuit in the internal circuits, or mechanical damage to the housing.

Difficulty: Hard Time: 2-3 hours (including programming) Steps: 15 Tools: 8 mm and 10 mm sockets, 10 mm open-end wrenches, SsangYong diagnostic scan tool (or compatible), gloves, flashlight

Step by step

15 steps
  1. Turn the ignition off, disconnect the negative battery terminal, and wait 5 minutes for the capacitors to discharge.
  2. Slide the front passenger seat all the way back, or remove it for easier access.
  3. Pry up the plastic cover on the floor under the seat and remove the nuts securing the ECU cover with an 8 or 10 mm socket.
  4. Remove the metal ECU bracket, usually held by 2-3 10 mm nuts.
  5. Remove the bolt securing the ECU connector. It fixes the main wiring harness to the unit housing.
  6. Carefully disconnect the main harness connector from the ECU. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight toward you, avoiding any tilting.
  7. Remove the ECU from the bracket.
  8. BEFORE installing the new ECU, read the data from the old unit with a dealer scan tool (VIN, variant coding, injector calibrations), if the old unit still responds.
  9. Install the new ECU in the bracket, tighten the connector bolt, and reinstall the bracket and cover nuts in reverse order.
  10. Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on (do not start the engine).
  11. Connect the SsangYong diagnostic scan tool to the OBD-II port (under the steering column, on the left).
  12. Program the new ECU with the vehicle VIN, the D20DT engine variant coding, and the injector calibration data (if applicable).
  13. For vehicles with an immobilizer: perform the key coding procedure. The scan tool must synchronize the key transponder with the new ECU and the immobilizer unit.
  14. After programming, start the engine and check that there are no diagnostic trouble codes, the idle is smooth, and the throttle responds properly.
  15. Take a 10-15 km (6-9 mi) test drive and read the codes again. The new ECU should adapt the fuel delivery and turbocharger boost parameters.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Replacing the ECU WITHOUT programming the VIN and immobilizer will make it impossible to start the engine. Take the vehicle to a specialist shop with SsangYong coding equipment. Trying to bypass the immobilizer with improvised methods can lock up the entire control system. ECUs from the 2.0 and 2.7 engines are physically identical but require different software, so installing an ECU from a different engine without reprogramming will cause the system to fail.
