SsangYong Kyron 2.0 XDi (2010): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The D20DT (2.0 XDi) diesel engine needs an oil change every 10,000 km or once a year. The drain plug is in the oil pan, and the filter is on the right side of the engine block (passenger side on left-hand-drive cars). This is a standard procedure for SsangYong diesels.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 20 Tools: 17 mm wrench or socket (drain plug), oil filter wrench (if needed), funnel, 6-7 L (6.3-7.4 qt) drain pan, shop rags

Part

  • 🔩 5W-30 or 10W-40 diesel engine oil, API CI-4/CJ-4 (5.3-5.5 L (5.6-5.8 qt) including the filter), oil filter (OE 6651800009 or equivalents Mann W 67/1, Mahle OC 264, Bosch 0 451 103 336)

Step by step

20 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running), then shut it off and let it sit for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle on a lift or drive it over an inspection pit, and secure it with the parking brake.
  3. Remove the engine skid plate (4-6 bolts around the perimeter, usually 10 mm or 12 mm).
  4. Place the drain pan under the drain plug (in the center of the oil pan, 17 mm head).
  5. Loosen the drain plug with a wrench, then unscrew it by hand. The oil will come out under pressure, so keep your hands clear.
  6. Wait for the oil to drain completely (5-7 minutes), until it stops dripping.
  7. Inspect the copper or aluminum washer on the plug. If it is deformed, replace it with a new one (OE 0149973940 or a universal 14 mm washer).
  8. Tighten the plug to 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft). Do not overtighten.
  9. Unscrew the old oil filter counterclockwise (located on the right side of the block, accessible from above or below). If it will not turn by hand, use a chain wrench.
  10. Wipe the filter mounting surface on the block with a clean rag and make sure the old gasket did not stay behind.
  11. Lubricate the rubber sealing ring of the new filter with clean engine oil.
  12. Fill the new filter halfway with oil and let it soak for 1-2 minutes.
  13. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the block, then tighten it an additional 3/4 turn (do not use a wrench to tighten it).
  14. Reinstall the engine skid plate.
  15. Pour 5 L (5.3 qt) of new oil through the oil filler neck (on the valve cover).
  16. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out within 2-5 seconds.
  17. Shut the engine off, wait 5 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. The mark should be between MIN and MAX, closer to MAX.
  18. Top up the oil if necessary (usually 200-400 mL (0.2-0.4 qt) is needed). Do not overfill above MAX.
  19. Check under the vehicle for leaks around the drain plug and the filter.
  20. Reset the service interval counter (if equipped) or write down the mileage of the oil change.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not use gasoline engine oil (SL/SM) in a diesel. Its total base number is insufficient, and it leads to rapid coking. Do not overtighten the drain plug, because the threads in the aluminum oil pan strip easily. Take used oil to a collection point. Do not pour it down a drain or onto the ground.
