Volkswagen T-Cross 1.5 TSI (2022): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The 1.5 TSI evo uses a paper cartridge filter in a plastic housing on the engine block. It is replaced together with the oil, and the cap gets new sealing rings. The scheduled interval is usually up to 15,000 km or once a year. If you mostly drive in the city or make short trips, don't stretch it.
Part
- 🔩 VW 508 00 / 504 00 spec oil (low-ash, viscosity 0W-20 or 0W-30 as specified in your service booklet), about 4 L (4.2 qt). Cartridge oil filter (filter element with sealing rings) for EA211 evo engines, new drain plug sealing washer

Step by step
12 steps- Warm the engine to operating temperature for 5-10 minutes, then shut it off. Park the car on level ground and raise it on a lift or drive it over an inspection pit.
- Remove the plastic skid plate (Torx or quick-release fasteners), if fitted.
- Open the hood and unscrew the oil filler cap. This speeds up draining.
- Place the drain pan underneath and remove the oil pan drain plug. The oil is hot, so be careful. Let it drain for 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, remove the oil filter cap from the top of the engine (using the cap-type wrench). Pull out the old cartridge together with the cap, placing a rag under the housing.
- Remove the old filter element and rings from the cap, lubricate the new rings with clean oil, and install the new filter in the cap. Make sure the rings do not twist.
- Install the filter cap with the new element and tighten it with a torque wrench. The cap torque is about 25 N·m (18 lb-ft); verify the exact value against the service specification.
- Wipe the drain plug seat on the oil pan, fit a new sealing washer, and tighten the drain plug to about 30 N·m (22 lb-ft) (range 25-35 N·m (18-26 lb-ft); verify the exact value against the service specification). Do not overtighten, since the oil pan is aluminum.
- Pour in about 3.5 L (3.7 qt) of oil, wait a couple of minutes, and check the level on the dipstick. Top up to a mark between min and max. The total fill with a filter change is about 4 L (4.2 qt); go by the dipstick, not by the number.
- Close the filler neck and start the engine for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light should go out right away. Check for leaks at the drain plug and the filter cap.
- Shut the engine off, wait 3-5 minutes, check the level again, and top up if necessary.
- Reinstall the skid plate. Reset the service interval indicator through the instrument cluster menu (in settings, under "Service"/"Maintenance") or with a diagnostic tool.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use oil without VW 508 00 / 504 00 approval (or another spec listed in the service booklet for your version). An engine with a turbocharger and a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) is sensitive to ash content. Do not overtighten the plastic filter cap, and always replace its rings, otherwise it may leak or crack. Take the used oil to a recycling point.
