Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI CAYC (2011): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

The 1.6 TDI CAYC engine has a diesel particulate filter (DPF), so you must use only low-ash oil meeting VW 507 00. The refill capacity for an oil change with a filter is about 4.3 L (4.5 qt). The oil filter on this engine is a paper cartridge in a plastic housing on top of the engine, so you need to drain the oil from the housing before working from underneath.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 45-60 minutes Steps: 12 Tools: Wrench or socket for the oil filter cap (this engine uses a cartridge-type filter; check the cap size on your car, usually 36 mm), socket for the drain plug (hex or TORX, depending on the plug), torque wrench, drain pan of 6-7 L (6.3-7.4 qt), funnel, screwdriver or wrench for the engine undertray, jack with jack stands or a lift, rags

Step by step

12 steps
  1. Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes), then shut it off. Hot oil flows faster, but be careful to avoid burns.
  2. Remove the upper decorative engine cover. Locate the oil filter housing with its cap on top of the engine.
  3. Unscrew the filter cap 2-3 turns, but do not remove it completely. This lets the oil drain from the housing into the oil pan through the drain valve. Wait a few minutes.
  4. Raise the car and secure it on jack stands (a jack is not a support). Remove the engine undertray.
  5. Place the drain pan under the engine, unscrew the drain plug and let the oil drain completely, 10-15 minutes.
  6. Replace the plug's sealing washer, clean the threads, and tighten the plug to about 30 N·m (22 lb-ft). If in doubt, check the manufacturer's specification, as the value depends on the plug type.
  7. From the top, unscrew the filter cap completely and remove the old cartridge. Wipe the inside of the housing with a clean rag, leaving no lint behind.
  8. Install the new cartridge. Replace the O-ring on the cap (if it does not come with the filter, buy it separately), lightly lubricate it with new oil and screw the cap on. Tightening torque is about 25 N·m (18 lb-ft); you can aim for 20-25 N·m (15-18 lb-ft). Do not overtighten the plastic cap.
  9. Pour in about 4 L (4.2 qt) of oil through the oil filler neck, wait a couple of minutes and check the level with the dipstick. Bring it up to the MAX mark (not above). The final amount is usually about 4.3 L (4.5 qt).
  10. Start the engine for 30-60 seconds: the oil pressure light should go out within a few seconds. Shut it off, wait 3-5 minutes and check the level again.
  11. Inspect the drain plug and the filter cap for leaks, then install the engine undertray and the decorative cover.
  12. Reset the service interval indicator in the instrument cluster (through the dash menu). Take the used oil and filter to a collection point for used oil.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not fill the engine with oil that lacks the VW 507 00 approval
  • Ordinary high-ash oil will quickly clog the particulate filter
  • Do not fill above the MAX mark: overfilling is harmful to the engine and the particulate filter
  • Change interval: with mixed driving, it makes sense to change the oil every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year, rather than following the maximum service interval
  • Work under the car only on reliable jack stands
