Hyundai Tucson 1.6 CRDi (2024): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
Changing the engine oil on 1.6 CRDi diesel engines (D16UF Smartstream) with a mild-hybrid system is done every 15,000 km or once a year. Under severe operating conditions (short trips, frequent cold starts, heavy city traffic), shorten the interval to 8,000-10,000 km. Always use oil that meets ACEA C3 to protect the diesel particulate filter.

Step by step
9 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-10 minutes of running) so the oil flows easily and drains from the oil pan as completely as possible. Shut the engine off, then raise the vehicle on a lift or position it over an inspection pit.
- Remove the engine undercover (4-6 bolts or plastic clips around the perimeter). Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Using a 17 or 19 mm wrench (depending on model year), remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes, until it stops dripping. Wipe off the plug and the surrounding surface of the oil pan.
- Install the drain plug with a new sealing washer (copper or aluminum) and tighten to 35-45 N·m (26-33 lb-ft). Do not overtighten — the threads in the oil pan are aluminum.
- Remove the old oil filter (located on the right side of the engine, accessible from above in the engine bay). If the filter will not turn by hand, use a chain-type or cup-type filter wrench.
- Lubricate the rubber sealing ring of the new filter with clean engine oil. Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the housing, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use a tool to tighten it.
- Pour about 5.5 L (5.8 qt) of oil through the filler neck, wait 2-3 minutes, and check the level with the dipstick. Top up to the MAX mark (not above it). The total capacity including the filter is 6.0 L (6.3 qt).
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Make sure the oil pressure warning light goes out, and check the drain plug and filter for leaks.
- Shut the engine off, wait 5 minutes, and check the oil level with the dipstick again, topping up to MAX if necessary. Reinstall the engine undercover.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Using oil that does not meet ACEA C3 leads to clogging of the DPF and expensive exhaust system repairs
- Do not use universal oils with high SAPS content (sulfated ash, phosphorus, sulfur) — they damage the catalytic converter and the particulate filter
- Dispose of used oil at a designated collection facility
