Lada Granta 1.6 8V (2015): Alternator Belt Replacement

The 1.6 8V engine (VAZ-11183) uses a single poly-V alternator belt, 6PK profile. Replace it every 60,000-80,000 km, or sooner if you see heavy wear, cracks, or oil contamination. The procedure is not difficult. The main thing is to tension the belt correctly.

Difficulty: Medium Time: 1-1.5 hours Steps: 10 Tools: 10 mm and 13 mm wrenches, Phillips screwdriver, pry bar or wooden wedge, belt tensioning tool (or a 17 mm open-end wrench for adjusting the tensioner)

Part

  • 🔩 Serpentine (poly-V) alternator belt, 6PK (GATES 6PK1090, BOSCH 1987946090, or equivalents from other manufacturers)

Step by step

10 steps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10-15 minutes to discharge the vehicle's electrical system.
  2. Open the hood and locate the alternator on the right side, above the radiator (when facing the engine from the front).
  3. Loosen the alternator-to-bracket mounting bolt (13 mm wrench). Do not remove it completely. Loosen it just enough that the alternator can move in the bracket slots.
  4. Find the tensioner adjusting bolt (usually at the bottom of the alternator) and loosen it with a 10 mm wrench by about 1-2 turns. The alternator should start to move up, relieving the belt tension.
  5. Remove the old belt from the pulleys: first from the alternator pulley, then from the crankshaft and water pump pulleys.
  6. Install the new belt in reverse order: first onto the water pump and crankshaft pulleys, then onto the alternator. Make sure the belt sits evenly on all pulleys, without twisting or misalignment.
  7. Tension the belt: use a screwdriver to lift the alternator upward until the belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner bolt (10 mm wrench). Correct tension: when you press the middle of the belt with your finger, the deflection should be about 5-8 mm.
  8. Do a final tightening of the alternator-to-bracket mounting bolt (13 mm wrench) to 30-40 N·m (22-30 lb-ft), taking care not to let the alternator housing shift or tilt.
  9. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  10. Start the engine and check that there is no squealing and that the belt stays on. Let it run for 2-3 minutes, shut it off, and recheck the tension.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Do not overtighten the belt. It causes premature wear of the alternator and water pump bearings. A loose belt causes squealing and slippage. If you see oil stains on the belt, look for an oil leak from the crankshaft seals or the valve cover gasket.
