Lada Granta 1.6 8V (11186, 87 hp) (2015): Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
The oil change on a Lada Granta with the VAZ-11186 engine (8-valve, 1.6 L) is done every 15,000 km or once a year. The first change on a new engine, or after an engine overhaul, is due at 2,500-3,500 km. The procedure needs no special equipment and can be done over an inspection pit or on car ramps.
Part
- 🔩 Oil filter (OE numbers 2108-1012005-08 or 2105-1012005-00, aftermarket equivalents MAHLE OC384, Mann W914/2, Bosch 0451103336). Engine oil, 3.5 L (3.7 qt): API SL/SM/SN, viscosity 5W-30, 5W-40 or 10W-40 (synthetic or semi-synthetic depending on operating conditions). It is best to replace the drain plug sealing washer at every oil change
Step by step
12 steps- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (5-7 minutes of running), then shut it off. Hot oil drains faster and more completely.
- Position the car over a pit or on ramps, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels.
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap (on the valve cover) to let air in.
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug (in the center of the lower part of the engine).
- Loosen the drain plug with a 17 mm wrench, then carefully unscrew it by hand (the oil is hot, so be careful). Let the oil drain for 10-15 minutes.
- While the oil drains, place the pan under the oil filter (located at the rear of the engine block, accessed from below). Unscrew the filter counterclockwise with a filter wrench, or, if you don't have one, drive a large screwdriver through the filter body and use it as a lever. About 200 ml (0.2 qt) of oil will spill out of the filter.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface with a clean rag. Fill the new filter halfway with fresh oil and lubricate the filter's rubber gasket with oil.
- Install the new filter by hand, screwing it on until the gasket touches the block, then tighten it another three-quarters of a turn (do not use a wrench, as you risk crushing the housing).
- Wipe the drain plug and the threads in the oil pan. If the plug has a copper or aluminum sealing washer, replace it with a new one. Tighten the plug to 30-35 N·m (22-26 lb-ft), or snug it by hand and then turn it a quarter turn more with a wrench.
- Pour 3.2 L (3.4 qt) of fresh oil through the oil filler neck. Wait 2-3 minutes, then check the level with the dipstick. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks, closer to MAX.
- Install the filler cap and start the engine. Let it idle for 30-60 seconds. The oil pressure light on the instrument panel should go out within 3-5 seconds after startup. Shut off the engine.
- Wait 5 minutes and check the level again. Top up the oil to a level between MIN and MAX (usually another 200-300 ml (0.2-0.3 qt) is needed). Inspect the drain plug and the filter from below for leaks.
Common mistakes and warnings
- Do not use oil below API SJ. The VAZ-11186 engine with hydraulic lash adjusters needs modern additives for wear protection. Do not overfill the oil above the MAX mark, because excess pressure will damage the crankshaft seals and cause leaks. Take used oil to a collection point. Do not pour it down a drain or onto the ground.
