Lada Granta 1.6 8V VAZ-11186 (2018): Fuel Filter Replacement

The fuel filter on a Lada Granta with the VAZ-11186 engine should be replaced every 30,000 km per the maintenance schedule (sooner if you use poor-quality fuel). It is located under the vehicle floor on the right side of the fuel tank, near the right rear wheel. This job is done over an inspection pit or on a lift.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 30-40 minutes Steps: 8 Tools: Flat-head screwdriver, container for leftover fuel, rags

Part

  • 🔩 VAZ 21230-1117010-81 (aftermarket equivalents: MANN WK512, BIG FILTER GB320, UFI 31.515.00)

Step by step

8 steps
  1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Remove fuse F21 (15 A, the fifth from the top in the fuse box under the instrument panel) using the red tweezers from the kit. Start the engine and let it idle until it stops on its own. Then crank the engine with the starter for 3-4 seconds to relieve any remaining pressure.
  2. Drive the car onto the pit or lift. Locate the fuel filter under the floor on the right side. It is held in a plastic bracket next to the fuel tank.
  3. Squeeze the retaining clips on the fittings and disconnect the fuel supply and return lines from the filter. Place a container under the connection or wrap it with rags, since the remaining gasoline will spill out.
  4. Slide the filter out of the bracket (spread the side stops if necessary). If the clips are stiff because of dirt, carefully release the retaining clips with a flat-head screwdriver.
  5. Install the new filter with the arrow pointing toward the front of the car (from the tank toward the engine). Push the filter between the bracket stops until it locks in place.
  6. Push the fuel lines onto the fittings of the new filter until the retaining clips click. Make sure the connections are securely latched.
  7. Reinstall fuse F21. Turn the ignition on (without starting the engine) for 5 seconds, turn it off, and repeat 2-3 times so the fuel pump builds up working pressure. Check the connections for fuel leaks.
  8. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then inspect the connections again from underneath for leaks.

Common mistakes and warnings

  • Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames and sparks. Fuel under pressure is flammable. When replacing the filter, use one with a filtration rating of 5-10 microns. A coarser filter will shorten the life of the fuel pump and injectors.
